May 1997 Playboy Issue: Donald Trump Article, Doug's Cartoon

After months and months and months of speeches, debates, interviews, tweets and polls, the Iowa Presidential caucuses on Monday, February 1st will start the countdown to the Tuesday, November 8th U.S. Presidential election.

Donald Trump - the businessman, reality TV star and politician - has made headlines for decades so I was naturally interested to read - The Art of THE DONALD - in the May 1997 issue of Playboy (pp. 88-92, pp. 162-166).

Doug's full-page color cartoon was published on p. 83.

Politicians: Doug's February 1988 Playboy Cartoon

Since politicians, polls and primaries are dominating news media coverage, I thought Doug's February 1988, p. 123 Playboy cartoon would be of interest.

caption:  "I've been here eight years, and I've never noticed any difference
between Democrats and Republicans."

The full-page color cartoon was also reproduced on p. 13 of The Art of Doug Sneyd, published by Dark Horse Books in 2011 and nominated in 2012 for an Eisner Award in the Best Humor Publication category.

Doug's preliminary development work is done by hand; at times, though, he saves a step by xeroxing the final pencil rough and then working this up for the color rough.

However, for the February 1988 cartoon he did a hand drawn color rough (artwork size:  8 1/4 x 11 on lightweight tracing vellum).

February 1988 cover - I thought you'd enjoy looking for the Rabbit logo.

Anthony Bourdain Interview: Playboy November 2011

Chef Anthony Bourdain gained celebrity notoriety after the publication of Kitchen Confidential:  Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly in 2000; his popularity continues today with his CNN food and travel show - Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown.

Doug's full-page color cartoon in the November 2011 issue was published on p. 89.

Nov. 1988 Playboy Issue: Jessica Rabbit - Dragon*Con photo - Doug's cartoon

The cover of the November 1988 issue, featuring a stunning Jessica Rabbit, immediately reminded me of how much fun Doug and I had at Dragon*Con in 2012.  (He was a featured guest.)

The annual 4-day Labor Day weekend convention - held at 5 major downtown Atlanta hotels, including the Hyatt Regency - draws some of the best cosplayers in the U.S.

Doug's full-page color cartoon in the November 1988 issue was published on p. 169;  caption:

"He has two distinct personalities - one chases women and the other watches football."

Look for changes and additions from this pencil rough (7 1/4 x 9 on heavy tracing vellum) to the published cartoon.  Hint:  eyebrows, frog and . . .

1974 News Cartoon: Gun Control Legislation

The issue of gun control legislation is as timely today as it was in Doug's 1974 news cartoon, syndicated by the Toronto Star Syndicate.

For nearly 20 years, starting in the mid-60s, Doug Sneyd and SCOOPS appeared daily in newspapers across North America.

January 1987 Cover by Erte, Playboy Interview with Don Johnson, Doug's Cartoon

The cover for the Holiday Anniversary Issue was done by Erte, an internationally acclaimed artist recognized for his Art Deco style.

The Playboy Interview (p. 49) featured Don Johnson, best known for his role as James "Sonny" Crockett in the 1980s TV series Miami Vice.

Later, he had the lead role in the 1990s cop series Nash Bridges; unfortunately, Blood & Oil, the ABC drama series which debuted this past September, has not been a success.  Johnson played a ruthless oil tycoon in North Dakota, booming after the biggest oil discovery in American history.

Doug's full-page color cartoon appeared on p. 179 of the January 1987 issue as well as on p. 231 of The Art of Doug Sneyd - the 248-page hardcover book was published by Dark Horse Books in 2011.

Caption:  "It was a wild New Year's party - we started off with finger food
and ended up with oral sex."
