Lynn Johnson's Loveable Farley Finds A Home in Orillia

In addition to being the Pattersons' lovable and heroic sheepdog from Lynn Johnston's internationally syndicated comic strip For Better or For Worse, Farley is also the face of the Farley Foundation, established in 2001 by the Ontario Veterinary Medical Association.

Lynn allows the Farley Foundation to use the limited edition ultra-soft plush Farley to raise funds for the foundation; she gave Doug and me a Farley prototype as a hostess gift this summer when we entertained her; Playboy gag writers Jim Foster, Chris Kemp, Paul Marshman and Pudge McDivitt; Bobby Chiu, Kei Acedera and Thierry Lafontaine from Imaginism Studios; Andrew Hunt and Shera Bechard, Miss November.

The foundation assists seniors (in receipt of the Federal Guaranteed Income Supplement) and disabled persons (in receipt of the Ontario Disability Support Payment of the Federal CPP Disability Benefit) to access emergency veterinary treatment for their pets. In May 2007 funding was also extended to assist women at risk of abuse who have fled to a women's shelter and whose pets are being cared for through OVMA's SafePet Program.

Mark Your Calendars for Oct. 8-10 in New York and May 21-22, 2011 in San Jose, CA

The first comic-cartoon convention where Doug sold Playboy cartoons and personalized copies of his 52-page book Unpublished Sneyd was in San Jose, California - May 2007. It was organized by Steve Morger and Steve Wyatt, who are again - but with a name change - planning a great 2-day event. Mark your calendars!

FYI: Doug's final convention for 2010 will be October 8-10 at the New York Comic-Con in the Jacob Javits Convention Center.

Doug Enjoys Meeting Fans of His Work With Playboy

Kevin stopped by Big Wow Art to talk with Doug about his lengthy career as a cartoonist for Playboy.  His first cartoon was published in the September 1964 issue.

If you're a fan of Playboy, one of Doug's lovely bunnies - whether a limited edition print or an artist's proof - makes a great gift.

HBO Brasil Producer Interviews Doug

A film crew from HBO Brasil videotaped Doug while he sketched Kathi, who was wearing a lovely costume and very unique hat.  Later, Fernanda Leite, a producer for HBO Brasil, interviewed Doug about his career with Playboy and experiences at SDCC.

After the interview, Bernard Mahe (seated left), owner of Galerie 9e Art in Paris, and Doug discussed the possibility of having a fall 2011 exhibit of Doug's Playboy work.

Kathi and Cal Dress Up for Their First SDCC

Although Kathi and husband Cal live in Ramona, California - which is about 25 miles from downtown San Diego, this was their first visit to SDCC.  They decided to wear costumes and really make it a special event!

Doug found Kathi's hand-crafted hat really unique!

Sunday, July 25: SDCC Exhibits Before the Doors Open at 9 a.m.

I knew I'd never make it through the aisles on the last day if I didn't get to the convention center before the doors opened at 9 a.m.  As it was, attendee lines - as early as 7 a.m. - were queuing up around the convention center.

Here's a quick look at more exhibits from the 41st annual SDCC; enjoy!

SDCC: Frank Cho at Big Wow Art

Doug and I met Frank 4 years ago through Steve Morger, owner of Big Wow Art, and we've been exhibiting with the group at SDCC since then.

(Kim was Frank's translator while Steve and Frank were in Paris this past May for an exhibit of Frank's work at Galerie 9e Art.)

Frank gave us a copy of his May 2010 Exhibit Catalogue.  His Paris show at Galerie 9e Art opened during the week of May 24; the grand opening was on May 27.

Jenny Does Sketch Comedy in LA

It's been a year since Doug and I met Jenny at SDCC; she had Doug personalize a copy of Unpublished Sneyd.  Currently she does sketch comedy in LA - namely, "Big Game Hunters Sketch Comedy" at the Jon Lovitz Comedy Club at Universal Citywalk.

We've stayed in touch, and through Doug she's submitted a number of gag ideas for Playboy cartoons.  In fact, she recently sold her first gag and is looking forward to having it published in the magazine.

Doug Sketches Susan

Doug and I first met Susan at the breakfast buffet - we were all staying at the Omni Hotel - Saturday morning, July 24.

Later that day she stopped by Big Wow Art to have Doug personalize a copy of Unpublished Sneyd.  While chatting, we found out that Susan (from Los Angeles) is a voice over artist and actress.
