Brunette on The Art of Doug Sneyd Book Jacket

Fans of Doug's Playboy cartoons, to this day, tell him the 248-page hardcover book, published in 2011, is great.   It was a positive experience working with Dark Horse Books and his editor Freddye (Lins) Miller.  She was especially creative in selecting both the cartoons for the 11-themed chapters and the design of the cover and book jacket.

A good example of her attention-to-detail was reviewing Doug's 450+ Playboy cartoons and selecting the brunette - from the November 1979 (p. 143) issue - to highlight on the spine of the book jacket.

Political Campaigns: Playboy Gag Rough Rejects

Although the next Presidential election is a year away (November 8, 2016), candidates have been campaigning for months - the first debate for Republican candidates was August 6th in Cleveland/the first debate for Democratic candidates was October 13th in Las Vegas.

Since Doug's first cartoon was published in Playboy (September 1964, p. 205), he's submitted thousands of cartoon roughs; here are 2 of his unpublished favorites focusing on political campaigning.

Doug's 1980 News Cartoons Focus on Ronald Reagan's Bid for President

Several candidates during the third Republican debate, hosted by CNBC at the University of Colorado Boulder on October 28th,  invoked the name of Ronald Reagan.   This will, no doubt, also occur during the Tuesday, November 10th debate in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, hosted by the Fox Business Network.

Doug's news cartoons - starting in the mid-1960s, appeared daily in newspapers across North America for nearly 20 years - naturally focused on the 1980 Presidential election.  George H. Bush and Ronald Reagan - a charismatic actor who starred in more than 50 films and served 2 terms as Governor of California - were the leading Republican candidates; Reagan received the nomination and selected Bush to be his running mate.

The Reagan-Bush ticket carried 44 states to incumbent Democrat Jimmy Carter's 6 states.

Conan Takes Over San Diego During Comic-Con

Conan O'Brien made history in 2015 as the first late night talk show host to broadcast his show from Comic-Con.  You couldn't miss the hype about his episodes being taped nightly from the Spreckels Theatre - Conan was everywhere:  on hotels, billboards, trolley cars, even the escalators and baggage carousels at the airport.

However, you knew "the Conan party was over" when Monday morning, July 13th those same walkways, escalators and baggage carousels at the airport were empty!

November 1965 Playboy Features Interview with Sean Connery

With the 24th James Bond movie, Spectre, opening in U.S. theatres Friday, November 6th, the interview with Sean Connery in the November 1965 issue of Playboy, p. 75, caught my attention.

Daniel Craig gets rave reviews as the current legendary British secret agent, but Connery will always be linked to the success of the franchise.

Doug first met Renee Witterstaetter and Michael Golden in 2007 in San Jose, California.

It was great seeing them again with the Big Wow Art group in San Diego this year; the three are also Special Guests at Wizard World New Orleans January 8-10, 2016.
