Burghley House

Continuing on with our 2-week tour of English castles and palaces, we visited Burghley House, near Stamford in Lincolnshire.  The 13,000-acre working estate has been the home of the Cecil family for over 400 years.

Despite being one of England's greatest Elizabethan houses, visitors will see  a number of contemporary sculptures (this was at the Visitor Entrance/Brewhouse Centre) in the property's permanent collection.

The entrance to the state rooms is directly behind this tree in the courtyard.

The tour of 18 state rooms begins in the Tudor kitchen.

Turtle soup may not be on many menus today, but it must have been popular at Burghley House from the display of the turtle skulls in the kitchen.

Visitors will see a wonderful private collection of 17th century Italian paintings, 18th century furniture and wood carvings, and Japanese ceramics.

Sandringham: Queen's Norfolk Home

The Sandringham Estate sits on nearly 60 acres and has been the private home of 4 generations of the British royal family.  It first opened to the public in 1977; the Vistor Centre has a restaurant, gift shop and plant/gardening center.

Before beginning our visit, we stopped at the War Memorial.

St. Mary Magdalene's Church, a parish church that dates back to the 16th century.

Princess Charlotte of Cambridge was christened here on July 5, 2015; her late grandmother Princess Diana was also baptized here.

Memorials to many members and relations of the royal family are in the church and churchyard.

There are 2 nature trails (1 mile and 2 miles) in the woodland setting.

The house, with exceptions, is open from April to October as the British royal family still live in it when they are in Norfolk.

In fact, the Queen hosts Christmas at Sandringham.  On December 25th, the royal family attends an 11 a.m. service at St. Mary Magdalene's Church, followed by a lunch - finished in time so everyone, including the Queen, can watch her annual Christmas message on TV at 3 p.m.

After touring the house and adjacent gardens, Doug and I walked to the Museum and Stables, with displays of royal life and estate history.

January 2008 Playboy Interview: Tina Fey

If you're a fan of comedian Tina Fey, you might want to check out the Playboy Interview, starting on p. 47, of the January 2008 issue.

Fey stars with Amy Poehler in Sisters, opening in theatres Friday, December 18th.

In addition to hundreds of art books, Doug has leather-bound volumes of Playboy magazines starting with Vol. 12, January-June 1965.

His first full-page color cartoon appeared in the September 1964 issue.
