Pollution: 1970s News Cartoons

In addition to working on textbook and magazine illustrations, advertising art, portraits and full-page color cartoons in Playboy over the decades, Doug's single-panel Doug Sneyd news cartoons appeared daily in newspapers throughout North America for nearly 20 years, starting in the mid-1960s.

Imaginism Studios - Nikko and the Sword of Light - Earns Emmy

It's always great to keep up with friends:  Doug and I first met Toronto artists Bobby Chiu (Creative Director) and Kei Acedera (Art Director) on a flight from Toronto to San Diego in 2007 to attend SDCC.  

We've stayed in touch over the years and were so happy that Nikko and the Sword of Light, which began as an independently produced animated comic book app at Imaginism Studios,  was the winner for Outstanding Children's Animated Program at the 43rd annual Daytime Creative Arts Emmy Awards.  

Congrats to our friends, Bobby and Kei!!!

1972 Playboy Press Paperback of Cartoons - How I Spent My Summer Vacation

In addition to Doug's full-page color cartoons appearing in Playboy magazine, a number were also selected for reproduction in Playboy Press 4 x 7 paperback collections from the early 1970s.  The paperbacks, which were typically 128 pages, featured B&W cartoons.

"The undertow is terrific!" was published on p. 47 of How I Spent My Summer Vacation.

The full-page color cartoon was first published on p. 233 in the September 1968 issue.

The back cover of How I Spent My Summer Vacation featured another of Doug's full-page color Playboy cartoons - published on p. 115 in the June 1965 issue.

It was also reproduced in The Art of Doug Sneyd on p. 66.  The 248-page hardcover book was published by Dark Horse Books in July 2011 and nominated in 2012 for an Eisner Award in the Best Humor Publication category.

SDCC: Cosplayers Enjoy Visiting Doug at Big Wow Art Booth

With comics-cartoon conventions growing in popularity, what attendees experienced even a decade ago has dramatically changed; SDCC, the largest in North America, reflects these trends, especially when it comes to cosplay.

What started as a hobby in the 1990s in Japan and some parts of Asia has now "gone comic-con mainstream."

Doug first attended SDCC in 2007, exhibiting with Steve Morger's Big Wow Art group; with SDCC this week - July 21-24/preview night July 20 - I thought I'd share some photos of cosplayers visiting Doug the past few years.

Doug's 2 Noah's Ark Cartoons

News coverage concerning a life-size replica of Noah's Ark opening to the public July 7, 2016 in Williamstown, Kentucky made me immediately think of 2 Noah's Ark cartoons that Doug rendered for Playboy.

The ark - located halfway between Cincinnati, Ohio and Lexington, Kentucky on I-75 - is 510 feet long, 85 feet wide and 51 feet high.

"I don't know, but judging from all the couples on board, I think it's some kind of sex cruise." - published on p. 143 in the March 2005 issue of Playboy and reproduced in The Art of Doug Sneyd on p. 190.  (The 248-page hardcover book was published by Dark Horse Books in July 2011.)

New Loose-Style 10 x 14 Original

All of Doug's loose-style originals, as well his 500-plus full-page color Playboy cartoons, are rendered on Arches of France cold pressed watercolor paper or art board using Dr. Ph. Martin's aniline dyes.

1985 Advertising Illustration

Prior to Doug's first full-page color cartoon appearing in Playboy - the September 1964 issue - and long after, he worked for several major textbook publishers in Canada, newspapers throughout North America, a number of Canadian magazines and advertising agencies in Toronto.

This lovely Sneyd blond was featured in a 1985 advertisement for Ken-L Ration Society canned dog food.
