Alycia and Maria Pose for Sketches in Unpublished Sneyd

Alycia and Doug had a chance to talk while he sketched her Saturday afternoon; she hosts The IT Factor Mondays from 2-3 p.m. on CBS Radio.

Maria, a jewelry designer, told Doug this was her first time attending NYCC.

Doug Sketches Elena in Unpublished Sneyd As A Gift for Her Boyfriend

Echo's booth at NYCC was busy over the 3-day convention, but Elena, who works with Echo, found time Saturday, October 9, to come over to Artist Alley and have Doug sketch her in Unpublished Sneyd. She told Doug she wanted a special gift for her boyfriend Jason, who is on military duty with the Marines.

Marianna-Etan & Cori-Mat: Couples Buy Personalized Copies of Unpublished Sneyd

Instead of flying directly from London to San Francisco to attend a wedding, Marianna and Etan decided to spend a few days in New York. It gave them an opportunity to check out NYCC; Doug's sketch of Marianna in Unpublished Sneyd will be a great souvenir of their first visit!

It was also a "first" visit to NYCC for Cori and Mat, who had Doug personalize his 52-page book to both of them.

Randy, Sarah and Tony Talk with Doug About His Career With Playboy

Randy (from New York City) has missed only one NYCC; he's been an avid collector of comics since first grade.

Sarah Forbes - curator of the Museum of Sex, 230 Fifth Avenue, New York - invited Doug and me to stop by the museum after the 3-day NYCC; she would give us a tour of the building and exhibits.

Tony drove in from Holmdel, New Jersey - about 45 minutes from New York City.

Fans of Doug's Artwork - Bill, Jeff and Stephen - Visit Artist Alley

NYCC 2010 was Bill's first comic-cartoon convention; he's taking one of Doug's gorgeous gals back with him to Augusta, Georgia.

Jeff, a freelance artist from Blairstown, New Jersey (about 80 miles west of New York City), had never attended NYCC prior to this year.

Stephen flew in from Mesa, Arizona to attend NYCC. While personalizing Unpublished Sneyd, the two talked about Ireland, which Doug and I visited for 10 days in June of 2003.

Saturday, October 9: Saying "Hello" to Exhibiting Artist Friends

Saturday was a very busy day at NYCC; it was good that I decided to stop by and see exhibiting artist friends early - Kei Acedera and Peter Chan from Imaginism Studios in Toronto always have a busy booth. The company's current project is work on the bull frog, alley cat and blue jay from The Familiars; Sam Raimi is the executive producer of The Familiars for Sony Pictures Animation.

Doug and I met Echo at Fan Expo Canada 2010 and were happy to see her exhibiting at NYCC. She's a fun lady as is her assistant (right), Elena, who stopped by Artist Alley later Saturday afternoon to have Doug sketch her in Unpublished Sneyd. It was a surprise gift for her boyfriend Jason, who's currently overseas on military duty.

Doug and I met Stephen Silver at the 2008 NYCC; in fact, he helped set up Doug's blog then. We always look forward to seeing Stephen and his wife Heidi when we're in San Diego at SDCC.

Saturday, October 9: Family from Caracas, Venezuela Visits NYCC

Sidney and her family were visiting NYCC for the first time so they got to the convention center at 10 a.m. - when it opened to the public - since they wanted to make the most of their visit.

Sidney was pleased with her sketch in Unpublished Sneyd; it's a great NYCC souvenir and something she can enjoy when the family returns to their home in Caracas, Venezuela.

Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art Exhibits at NYCC

Karl Erickson, director of New York's MoCCA - the Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art, had a table near Artist Alley so it was convenient to stop by and talk with him about the museum and its activities, which "showcase, discuss, archive, analyze, document and celebrate" comics and cartoons.

A major MoCCA happening is the annual MoCCA Festival, a 2-day event attracting fans, creators and publishers from around the world. Put April 9-10, 2011 on your calendar for MoCCA Fest!

There are 3 museums in the U.S. which focus on comics and cartoons. In addition to MoCAA, check out:

Toonseum in Pittsburgh/Joe Wos, executive director

Cartoon Art Museum in San Francisco/Andrew Farago, curator

Artist Friends Enjoy Thai Dinner

It's always great to get together with artist friends for a good meal following a busy convention day. After the close of the opening day of NYCC, several of us decided to have Thai cuisine; our hotel concierge recommended Aceluck. It was also great that it was only a few blocks from the Jacob Javits Convention Center.

(aisle, l-r) Kei Acedera and Peter Chan, Imaginism Studios; Clay and Shelley Moore, CS Moore Studio Ltd.
