SCOOPS Syndication

Doug developed a self-syndicated satirical strip, titled SCOOPS, in 1978. Unlike other strips with political orientation, such as Li'l Abner or Doonesbury, SCOOPS was not tied to a central character, story line or location so Doug could cast his satirist's eye wherever he chose - one day it focused on the Canadian Prime Minister, the next day it zeroed in on the U.S. Senate, famine in Africa or the oil-rich Middle East.

SCOOPS combined the best elements of the editorial cartoon with those of the comic strip and appeared on editorial and op-ed pages throughout Canada and the U.S. for nearly a decade.

"Erotic Comics" Chronicles Adult Humor

Six cartoon gag roughs from Doug's 52-page book, Unpublished Sneyd, are included in the recently published Erotic Comics: A Graphic History from Tijuana Bibles to Zap Comix by British writer-editor-designer Tim Pilcher, foreward by Aline Kominsky-Crumb.

The hardcover 192-page book (ISBN: 0810995158) was published March 2008; publisher comments describe the work - "This international survey of erotic comics chronicles a groundbreaking form of sexual expression up to 1970."

Favorite "Unpublished Sneyd" Gag Roughs

A cartoon gag rough is just what the name implies: a rough drawing that must, within seconds, convey the humor of the gag line.

In Doug's 52-page book, Unpublished Sneyd, he's selected 100 of his favorite rejects from the thousands of B & W and color cartoon gag roughs that he has submitted to Playboy since 1963.

(This "favorite" is from pg. 10.) Enjoy!

Winter Home-Away-from-Home

It's time to pack up for the return drive to Doug's home/studio in Orillia, Ontario, Canada, where he's lived since 1969.

Doug and Heidi spend nearly six months at her condo in Orange Beach, Alabama - enjoying a wonderful view from her balcony each and every day.

Thank You, Orange Beach Librarians

Doug and Heidi visit the Orange Beach Public Library several times throughout the week; the friendly, knowledgeable staff - (seated) Alisa/(back, l-r) Sherry, Angela, Andie and Seth - typically help Doug find cartoon reference and interesting audiobooks, which he listens to while working on Playboy finishes.

Working in Watercolor

Fans of Doug's Playboy artwork frequently ask, "What medium do you work in when rendering finishes?"

Watercolor, using Dr. Ph. Martin's Synchromatic Transparent Watercolor on Peterboro HI-ART board; Doug is working on a Playboy finish prior to leaving Orange Beach to return to his home/studio in Canada.

Authors Meet at Orange Beach Library

You never know who you'll run into at the Orange Beach Library! The computer lab has had a lot of business this week because students are coming in to finish up projects, to write papers or just to study. We also had some celebrities in the library. Playboy cartoonist Doug Sneyd and his cohort, Heidi, came in to update Doug's blog when they ran into author Theodore Pitsios, who was checking on his web site. Doug and Heidi are great friends of the library and Theodore is a former member of the Orange Beach Library Writers' Group. Watch for news on future book signings with these authors.

Dancing the Night Away

One of our favorite pastimes is dancing to Jim & John, performing 4 nights a week at Perdido Beach Resort on the Alabama Gulf Coast. The popular local duo helps make the beach "cool" - whether one's in the mood for swing, rock 'n roll, a cha-cha or waltz.

RadioLive in Pensacola

A favorite evening for Doug and me when we're back at my Gulf Coast condo is attending RadioLive performances in Historic Pensacola, Florida. WUWF Public Media, 88.1 FM, hosts the monthly 90-minute programs, which feature three individual performers or musical groups, each playing 2 alternating sets of about 15 minutes. The broadcast then ends with all the performers assembling for a final jam session. Mary-Lou (pictured) from Brittany, France, along with singer-guitarist Patricia Musgrove and singer-songwriters Tammerlin gave outstanding performances this month.

After the convention closed Sunday night, it was time to relax. Several exhibitors - Alberto Ruiz, Stephen Silver, Jose Lopez, Bobby Chui, Kei Acedera and Thierry Lafontaine -had dinner at The New Yorker Hotel before going up to Doug's suite to wrap-up the weekend and talk about meeting up again at Super-Con (May 17-18 in San Jose) and Comic-Con (July 23-27 in San Diego).
