Wizard World New Orleans, January 8 -10, 2016

Doug enjoyed talking with fans who stopped by Artist Alley during the 3-day convention.

Chris purchased the final pencil rough for Doug's June 1993, p. 97 Playboy cartoon, which was also reproduced on p. 101 in The Art of Doug Sneyd, published by Dark Horse in July 2011.

The 248-page hardcover book, featuring 270 of Doug's full-page color cartoons, will return to print in a softcover art book; it is now available for pre-order at $19.99 (scheduled delivery July 12, 2016) through:

Lara had Doug do a quick convention sketch of a classic bunny.

Doug did a 10 x14 pencil portrait sketch of Sunshine.

Zach, a musician at Maison Bourbon Jazz Club, bought a Playboy gag rough "reject" as a souvenir from the 3-day convention.

Cars "Star" at Wizard World New Orleans

Whether in a movie, on TV or a convention floor, cars are popular - just look at the success of Jerry Seinfeld's Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee or CBS late-night comedian James Corden's Carpool Karaoke.

Convention Floor at Wizard World New Orleans

Although Doug was busy talking with fans of his work and other exhibiting artists during the 3-day Wizard World convention in New Orleans (January 8-10), I left Artist Alley early one morning to take some photos of booths on the convention floor.

Among the booths selling comic books, lightsabers, T-shirts and collectible statues, I also discovered a booth featuring several working tattoo artists.

Wall Street Investors: Unpublished Sneyd Gag Rough

Since energy stocks are playing havoc with Wall Street investors, Doug's Playboy gag rough reject from Unpublished Sneyd, p. 44, seems timely to share with blog readers.

Doug selected his 100 favorite Playboy gag rough rejects for Unpublished Sneyd, now in a second printing.

Hampton Inn & Suites in Historic New Orleans Landmark Building

The Hampton Inn & Suites, a block from the Mississippi River and across the street from the Morial Convention Center, is partly housed in a historic converted cotton warehouse; the oil painting in the lobby depicts commerce (grain, coffee, cotton and produce) shipped through the port of New Orleans centuries ago.

We checked into the hotel (in the Arts & Warehouse District) January 7th - seeing both Christmas and Mardi Gras decorations in the side entrance on Gaiennie Street.

A few days later the lobby decorations celebrated Mardi Gras, when 2 million visitors typically come to the Crescent City for parties and parades in the French Quarter.

Wizard World artists and attendees shared the Morial Convention Center with a Mardi Gras ball on Saturday, January 9th.  Doug couldn't pass up the opportunity to hold the hand of a Mardi Gras Queen!

Visit to Katrina Memorial: "Scrap House"

Since New Orleans was a 200-mile drive from Orange Beach, Alabama (where Doug and I spend our winters), we checked into the Hampton Inn & Suites/New Orleans early in the afternoon so we could do some sightseeing before setting up for the Wizard World convention (January 8-10, 2016).

The "Scrap House" memorial to Hurricane Katrina stands across the street from the city's convention center, where many refugees lived after their homes were destroyed.

New Orleans artist Sally Heller used Katrina *trash and converted a standing dead oak tree into a "menacing bayou monster" with its head stuck in a shack.

*The bark was made of metal scraps from salvaged 55-gallon oil drums.

The public art piece was unveiled August 29, 2009 - the fourth anniversary of the devastating storm.

This commemorative memorial faces "Scrap House;" the storm's final death toll was 1,836; 705 people are reported as still missing.

The small, quiet park across from the convention center in the Arts & Warehouse District is adjacent to "Scrap House."

Playboy February 2008 Issue: Wonder Woman on Cover, Doug's Cartoon

Playmate of the Year 205 Tiffany Fallon portrayed Wonder Woman on the cover of the February 2008 issue.

(Earlier, Doug did a Wonder Woman cartoon that was published on p. 111 of the October 1981 issue; it was also reproduced on p. 29 in The Art of Doug Sneyd.  The 248-page hardcover book, featuring 270 of Doug's Playboy cartoons, was published in 2011 by Dark Horse Books and nominated for 2012 Eisner Award in the Best Humor Publication category.)

caption:  "Tonight I'm looking for a good guy."

His full-page color cartoon in the February 2008 issue appeared on p. 91; it was also reproduced on p. 111 in The Art of Doug Sneyd.

caption:  "I already have a husband.  I'm just looking for someone who wants to be my valentine."

This is the approved gag rough for the cartoon published in the February 2008 issue/notice changes made when "working up" the finish.

Early pencil study.
