Lauderdale, Florida as well as long-time seller empire.auctions based in Ringgold, Georgia.

We are pleased to continue working with Jeff O'Bryant and welcome Steve Lipsky, who will be listing nudes under the Adult eBay category. We trust that visitors to these two eBay sellers can feel confident that the weekly listings of Doug's work are legitimate. eBay has some seller limits on new accounts, but rest assured we will add new artwork as these limits increase over the coming months. The new account will go live with its first round of listings on Thursday, February 11, 2021.

Listings may offer:

• personalized copies of Unpublished Sneyd, The Art of Doug Sneyd (Dark Horse Books) and Secret Sneyd: The Unpublished Cartoons (Dark Horse Books)

• Playboy preliminary pencil and color roughs as well as Hef-approved gag roughs

• original 10 x 14 and 11 x 17 artwork, rendered on Arches of France cold press watercolor paper using Dr. Ph. Martin's aniline dyes

• sketchbooks and limited edition prints

Artwork posted on the Doug Sneyd Premium Gallery at www.comicartfans remains available; new listings of remaining convention inventory will be listed on eBay at DougSneydArt (nudes) and empire.auctions (non-nudes).

blog posts by Heidi Hutson

July 31, 2021 - UPDATE:

For DougSneydArt on eBay, we had hopes to list up to ten new art pieces every week. Unfortunately, for the foreseeable future, we are able only to add new pieces as older pieces sell. eBay's restrictions on new accounts limit the dollar amount that we can list to $25,000.00. And we've now reached that limit. So as currently listed art sells, we can list new pieces to replace them. But until we reach the next selling milestone eBay has set for us, we are unable to add anything beyond that. We appreciate your understanding and will keep you informed as to when we will again be able to list artwork on a weekly basis. In the meantime, there are several nice pieces listed under both DougSneydArt and empire.auctions for fans to peruse.
Doug Sneydhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09116180386284771169noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3504283407184162665.post-14176726374668190052019-01-06T06:15:00.000-08:002019-01-06T06:15:01.287-08:00Doug in Studio, Dark Horse Books

The January/February 2016 issue of Playboy was the last to feature full-page color cartoons. Doug's first cartoon appeared on p. 205 in the September 1964 issue; this was his final appearance in the magazine.

All of Doug's preliminary development pencil and color roughs and full-page color cartoons in Playboy since the early 1960s were done by hand - overlays were common.

This pencil rough, image area 7 1/2 x 10, was done on heavy tracing vellum.
After Doug's first comics-cartoon convention in June 2007 in San Diego, California, he decided to add 11 x 17 limited edition prints (numbered 1 through 25 or 1 through 50) to his convention inventory of Playboy cartoon originals, preliminary pencil and color roughs and personalized copies of Unpublished Sneyd.

Since Doug's first comics-cartoon convention - June 2007 in San Jose, California, he's drawn thousands of bunny profiles for attendees and fans of his work in Playboy; his first full-page color cartoon was published in the September 1964 issue, page 205.

In addition to a commissioned bunny - rendered on Arches of France watercolor paper or art board using Dr. Ph. Martin's aniline dyes - copies of Unpublished Sneyd were sold with a pencil/black and white bunny profile sketch on the Introduction page. The self-published book featured a collection of Doug's favorite unpublished cartoon gag roughs.

Since the first issue of Playboy, covers featured both gorgeous ladies and the iconic Bunny - an exception, however, was the January 2004 Fiftieth Anniversary Issue. The Bunny had the cover to himself.
It features 270 of Doug's full-page color cartoons.

• "Your husband should be home shortly, Mrs. Simpson. He's pulling out now." on p. 161.

Since the early 1960s, Doug's submitted thousands of loose-style gag roughs to Playboy; close to 500 were approved by Hef for final art and ultimate publication.

After receiving the notice for an upcoming cartoon meeting, Doug would immediately call and/or email his writers with the requested topics - sports, entertainment, holidays, etc. - and the due date. He liked to receive their gag lines two weeks before the deadline. When they arrived, he'd take a couple of days to read them over and select those he thought would be visually interesting and also get a good laugh.

Once the best gags were chosen, he'd go to the drawing board in his studio overlooking Lake Couchiching in Orillia, Ontario and began to work.

The process started with a quick, loose sketch in pencil on standard 8 1/2 x 11 copy paper, to block out the characters and set the scene. When these were finished, he'd go back, using a black Sharpie permanent marker, and add the caption and details. Sometimes he'd overlay changes by cutting out a piece of paper, gluing it down, and then drawing over it. Although some artists work with graphics programs, all of Doug's work was done by hand. If there was time, he might also decide to enhance the roughs by adding color - first the flesh tones then the other colors, one by one. He'd lay out six to eight at a time on a work table and add highlights using Dr. Ph. Martin's aniline dyes, which Doug used to render all of his Playboy originals. This added step made it easier for Hef to quickly visualize the essence of the gag during a meeting that involved hundreds of cartoon roughs from several different artists.

Also at this time, Doug added his signature, generally in a lower corner, with the writer's initials under it. This identification was important since Playboy paid the gag writers directly, it allowed the magazine to match initials with mailing addresses and issue checks to the right people.

Approved - "OK color page H" in black Sharpie - loose-style gag rough original, cartoon published in the December 2012 issue on p. 87.
The first issue of Playboy - featuring Marilyn Monroe on the December 1953 cover - was produced in Hef's Hyde Park, Illinois kitchen; it was undated as he was unsure there would be a second issue.

Despite the magazine's popularity; issues remained undated for several years, but covers consistently featured the suave, sophisticated bunny icon - in the August 1961 issue the rabbit was surrounded by beauties by several of Hef's popular cartoonists: (from left to right, standing) John Dempsey, Richard Taylor, Erich Sokol, Alberto Vargas, Claude (Smith), E. Simms Campbell and (seated) Eldon Dedini.

Doug's first full-page color cartoon was published in the September, p. 205, 1964 issue; it was later reproduced on p. 71 in The Art of Doug Sneyd, published by Dark Horse Books in July 2011. The 248-page hardcover book featured 270 of his Playboy cartoons.

Hef's approved gag rough - "OK H" in red pencil - on 20 lb. standard paper. Before sending gag rough originals to the Mansion for Hef's selection and approval of new material, Doug added his signature, generally in the lower corner, with the writer's initials under it. This identification was important: since Playboy paid the gag writers directly, it allowed the magazine to match initials with mailing addresses and issue the checks to the right people.
In the years since Doug's first cartoon was published in Playboy (September 1964 issue on p. 205), he's rendered thousands of loose-style gag roughs, which were sent to Hef for approval.
