Framing Doug's Playboy Cartoon Preliminary Color Roughs

Since all of Doug's preliminary work for Playboy cartoons is done by hand, his color rough originals can be attractively framed - as one collector did by also including a cartoon tearsheet and business card.

He recently sent us this photo of how he framed the color rough and tearsheet for the June 2000, p. 105 Playboy cartoon - also reproduced on p. 142 of The Art of Doug Sneyd (Dark Horse Books, July 2011).

caption:  "No, silly, casual dress day is Thursday.  Friday is casual sex day."

This is the color rough for the March 2001, p. 118 Playboy cartoon; notice Doug's decision to change the color of the car in the upper right and the salesman's hair color.

This is the color rough for the July 1998, p. 87 Playboy cartoon (also reproduced on p. 110 of The Art of Doug Sneyd); notice numerous changes from the color rough to the published cartoon.

Framed Playboy Gag Rough Reject from Unpublished Sneyd

Doug had a Playboy gag rough reject from Unpublished Sneyd (p. 26) framed as a house warming gift when I moved into a condo on the Alabama Gulf Coast.

His gag rough originals - on standard printer paper using aniline dyes - are 8 1/2 x 11; the framed size is 13 1/2 x 16 1/2.

If attending SDCC (July 8-12), stop by Big Wow Art to check out Doug's available gag rough originals.

Graduation, Wedding and Beach Humor: Playboy Gag Rough Rejects/Originals at SDCC

In the years since Doug's first full-page color cartoon was published in Playboy (September 1964), he's submitted thousands of cartoon gag roughs to the magazine.  Of course, not all can be selected for final art and ultimate publication in the magazine.

For the first time, Doug will have a selection of these originals at Big Wow Art during the San Diego Comic-Con - July 8 (Preview Night) and July 9-12.

Playboy gag rough reject originals are also posted on the Doug Sneyd Premium Gallery at:

June 1964 Playboy Cover

Unpublished Sneyd features 100 of Doug's favorite Playboy gag rough rejects as well as a number of Q & A topics, including:  "How did you get started doing cartoons for Playboy?"

"On a visit to Chicago in the early 60's, I brought along some of my published magazine illustrations and was able to arrange a meeting with a Playboy editor.  I had hopes of doing some illustrating for the magazine; instead, the editor suggested that I consider doing cartoons for them.  I told him I didn't think it was my cup of tea.  However, when he told me what Playboy paid for cartoons, I quickly developed a different taste in tea."

Doug's first full-page color cartoon was published in the September 1964 issue, p. 205:

"He wants to know if we make deliveries!"

It was also reproduced on p. 71 in The Art of Doug Sneyd, published by Dark Horse Books.

While in Doug's studio, I found a copy of the June 1964 issue and thought it was interesting to see the early Playboy Rabbit.

The Art of Doug Sneyd - a 248-page hardcover book featuring 270 of Doug's full-page color cartoons - will be available during the San Diego Comic-Con, July 8 (Preview Night) and July 9-12, at Dark Horse Books and Stuart Ng Books, located across the aisle from Big Wow Art, where Doug has exhibited since 2007.  SDCC attendees can purchase a book during the 5-day event or bring in a personal copy for signing; there is no charge.

May 2008, p. 93 Playboy Cartoon: Preliminary Pencil Rough

You may want to check out a preliminary pencil rough for the May 2008, p. 93 Playboy cartoon:

"If compatibility is a problem, I think you'll find me very user-friendly."

All of Doug's artwork is done by hand; the pencil rough - 5 1/2 x 7 - is done on heavy tracing vellum.
