In the late 1970s, Doug focused his efforts on a new venture : SCOOPS, a news-oriented comic strip not tied to a central character, story line or location. He decided to self-syndicate SCOOPS and traveled in Canada and throughout the U.S., calling on close to 90 newspapers in 60 days - with 73 percent of those newspapers buying SCOOPS.
And within a few years, three SCOOPS (pictured below) were among 350 editorial cartoons - "representing the best works" of 132 editorial cartoonists - included in the Best Editorial Cartoons of the Year - 1980 Edition.
In the Foreward Daniel Patrick Moynihan, U.S. Senator from New York, wrote, "Here then is another volume in a series of enduring value. More than an adornment of our political culture, it's a pungent and appealing reminder of those things that make us what we are."
